Like all other North Dakota high school spring sports teams, the Watford City High School golf teams have patiently been waiting for the start of their season. And with four golf meets already cancelled because of snow-covered courses, LeRoy Bettenhausen, girls head coach, says his girls are ready to start playing.
“Our roster is filled with young, talented players,” states Bettenhausen. “The ladies have a great attitude and work ethic and since we haven’t been able to get onto a course yet, our focus has been on learning and refining swing skills in iron and wood play.”
With 19 golfers out this season, Bettenhausen anticipates being able to field a full roster of junior high, junior varsity and varsity athletes.
The varsity team will be led by senior Krstyle Folland, sophomores Samantha Schwan and Karson Pederson, and freshman Emilie Anderson.
“These four varsity golfers are returning veterans from the 2008 ND State B Runner-up Team,” states Bettenhausen. “In order for us to be competitive, these four ladies need to play solid all year for us.”
Other players vying to fill varsity, junior varsity and junior high spots are: freshmen Bessie Schmitz, Tillie Alveshere, Ashley Hilton, Shaunta Miller; eighth graders Allison Monson, Fallon Maston, Emily Ramage, Maty Benth, Taylor Dwyer, Cassidy Hatter; and seventh graders Sydney Slais, Brooke Sanford, Kat Kinden, Kylie Harrington and Jayden White Owl.
“We look forward to various playoffs during the season to make us a better and very competitive team by the end of the season,” states Bettenhausen.
“The Northwest Conference as well as Region 6 are loaded with talent,” states Bettenhausen. “Kenmare returns all of their players from last year and Tioga also has several quality players returning.  There will definitely be some very competitive and fun meets this season.”
The varsity and junior varsity open their season on Tuesday, April 21, when the Hazen Bison visit Watford City for a team dual.
The junior high girls are scheduled to open their season on Monday, April 20 at the Northwest Conference in Stanley.
The varsity and junior varsity begin tournament play Saturday, April 25, at the Watford City High School Invitational.
