The Watford City boys basketball team closed out its 2008-2009 campaign on a high note as the Wolves defeated the Bowman Bulldogs 62-46 in the consolation championship game of the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament at the Minot State Dome on Saturday afternoon. Although Bowman got off to an early lead, Watford City's smothering defense and high powered offense soon tamed the Bulldogs.

After losing a heart-breaking opening round game to Linton, Watford City bounced back to edge the North Star Bearcats 59-58 on Friday afternoon to advance to the consolation title game at the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament. Once again, Watford City found itself in a fight to the very end. But this time, the Wolves tasted the sweetness of victory as Christian Schulz scored the game winning basket on a spinning layup with 11 seconds left in the game.

The much hyped match-up between the top two ranked teams in Class B basketball lived up to its expectations as the Watford City Wolves, the No. 2 team in the state, took on the No. 1-ranked Linton Lions in opening round action of the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament on Thursday afternoon. But unfortunately for the Wolves, the outcome of the game, which saw huge momentum swings, was disapp ointing as Watford City fell to the Lions 66-63 after battling back from a 16-point deficit midway through the third quarter.

Watford City will be making a return trip to the North Dakota State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament as the Wolves defeated the Mandaree Warriors 77-63 in the Region 8 title game last Thursday evening. The Wolves, who ended the season with a 22-2 record and were ranked No. 2 in the final North Dakota Class B Poll, will take on undefeated Linton, the No. 1 ranked Class B team in the state, at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday in first day action at the Minot State Dome.

Watford City and Mandaree survived opening round action of the Region 8 Boys Basketball Tournament action on Monday as the Wolves defeated the Divide County Maroons 66-59, while Mandaree bested the Ray Jays 49-37. Watford City and Mandaree will now advance to semifinal action on Tuesday evening where the Wolves will take on Tioga and Mandaree faces Parshall.

The Watford City girls basketball team played their best game of the season on Thursday night as the Wolves defeated the Mandaree Warriors 64-50 to improve their season record to 10-15 and to take third place in the Region 8 Tournament. In the semifinal action of the tournament, the Wolves fell to New Town 43-34.
