Walter A. Link, 71, a longtime resident of Alexander, N.D., passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alexander, with burial following the service at the Alexander Cemetery. Rev. Kevin Beard of Mission Lutheran Church, of Williston, will officiate.
Walter Arthur Link was born in Williston, N.D., on Aug. 14, 1941, to Arthur and Grace (Johnson) Link. He was taken home to the family ranch in Randolph Township, southwest of Alexander where he was reared in the rural North Dakota traditions. He was raised in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was first educated in his primary years in a one-room school-house near the farm and graduated from Alexander High School in 1959. Walter continued his education at NDSU in Fargo, N.D., where he would receive a mechanical engineering degree in 1964.
He was united in marriage to Susan Powell at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alexander, on June 3, 1962. To this union, three children were born, David, Brian and Wendy.
With his college degree in hand, Walter and Susan moved to Seaford, Del., in 1964 where he took a position with DuPont as a mechanical engineer. Walter continued work for DuPont, living in different locations where he was needed including, Nashville, Tenn., until taking a job closer to home in 1969. That year Walter moved his family back to the plains at Fargo, N.D., where he took a position with Industrial Builders. In 1972, Walter had the opportunity to move back home. It was home where Walter felt most complete, raising his family and farming and ranching all these many years. He raised small grains and cattle.
Walter will long be remembered for his infectious smile and his good nature. He served over the years on many local boards and through the years was a member of all the community affairs Alexander had going. He especially enjoyed the early morning Breakfast Club at the cafe, the local Lions and the rural fire department.
Walt is survived by his mother Grace Link, of Bismarck, N.D.; wife, Susan, of Alexander, N.D.; two sons, David (Orfa) Link, of Omaha, Neb., and their children, Killashandra and Arthur; Brian (Terri) Link, of Roseau, Minn., and their children, Chris (Katie), Austin and Brandon; daughter, Wendy (David) Tomczak, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and her son, David Kramer; four brothers, Marvin (Jane), of Milan, Minn., Donald (Phyllis), of Alexander, N.D.; Rodney (Anne), of Rockford, Ill.; and Harvey (Gale), of Wahpeton, N.D.; brother-in-law, Glen Hetzel and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gov. Arthur Link, and sister, Joann Hetzel.
The family encourages any memorials to be directed to the Alexander Museum or the American Cancer Society.
