Shirley Olson
Funeral services for Shirley Olson, 90 of Sidney, Mont., will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2014, at the First Lutheran Church in Watford City, N.D., with Pastor Rob Favorite and Pastor Alton Hillesland officiating. Interment will be in Spring Creek Cemetery, Watford City, N.D., under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014 and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Watford City, N.D.
Shirley Josephine (Nyberg) Olson was born May 15, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minn. She moved with her parents Otto and Clara (Engebretson) Nyberg to their farm south of Watford City in the Spring Creek community in 1926.
Shirley attended Hively School and Watford City High School graduating in 1940. She met Harris Olson when he moved to Watford City to work for his uncle Knute Hagen. They were married on Dec. 22, 1943, at her parent’s home.
While Shirley was a stay-at-home mother she also worked as a professional seamstress and was involved in the Homemakers Club and Spring Creek Lutheran Church. On Oct. 3, 1971, Harris passed away. In 1972 she moved into Watford City. She worked for My Lady’s Dress Shop and Borseth’s Department Store before working as the parish secretary for First Lutheran Church, retiring in 1992.
Shirley enjoyed traveling making several trips to Seattle, Wash., Arizona, Florida and Washington D.C., and other areas on the east coast as well as to Minnesota. She was always ready to go somewhere as long as she didn’t have to drive.
Shirley was an active member of First Lutheran Church, Peace Circle, Homemakers Club and birthday club. She lived in Watford City until August 2010 when she moved to The Lodge in Sidney, Mont.
Shirley enjoyed quilting and made quilts for her children and grandchildren and took great joy in helping the ladies at the church make quilts, participating even after she moved to Sidney. She also enjoyed reading, doing word search puzzles and visiting with her family.
Shirley died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Sidney Health Center.
Shirley is survived by her four children: Kelly (Frances) Olson of Watford City, N.D.; Becky (Jim) Schwartz of Sidney, Mont.; Catherine (Dave) Logosz of Dickinson, N.D.; and Lori (Robert) Aho of Duluth, Minn.; grandchildren: David (Amanda) Olson, T.J. Schwartz, Barbara (Darin) Curren, Justin (Margaret) Schwartz, Ryan (Kayla) Schwartz, Matthew Aho, Alex Aho, Amanda Aho, Emily Aho; Hal Wright, Chris Wright, and Nick Chavez; and great-grandchildren: Micah Schwartz, Jillian Schwartz, Zander Schwartz, Levi Olson, Kira Faust, Tylie Wright, Avery Fawcett, Nick Wright, Otto Wright, and Ashlynn Wright.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
