June Peterson

Posted 7/15/14 (Tue)

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the First Lutheran Church in Watford City for June Opal Maxine Peterson, 86, who passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the McKenzie County Hospital in Watford City. Reverend Mark Honstein will officiate.
June was born on her parents farm 20 miles east of Watford City on June 11, 1928.  She grew up on this farm with her two older brothers, Edwin and Mormon, enjoying raising sheep, cattle and growing wheat.
June attended elementary and middle school at Croff and Williams Schools, also taking correspondence courses during this time. Her brothers Eddie and Mormon would help her get to school, using horse, motorcycle, or car and truck. June loved to tell her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren how she eventually enjoyed her independence when she could drive the motorcycle herself - until she accidentally drove it into an outhouse.
June graduated from Watford City High School, taught school briefly at Croff School, then married Arnold Peterson on Dec. 7, 1946. She moved eight miles from her birthplace to live on the Peterson homestead in Bear Den Township.  On this homestead, June helped Arnold with daily chores of milking cows, separating cream, churning butter, collecting eggs and attending to a large garden. June always loved flowers, her favorite being pansies and roses. She would gladly share her flowers with whoever came to the door, neighbors and strangers alike. June loved to sew. She sewed wedding dresses and all attendants dresses for both Sheila’s and Ardyce’s weddings. June and Arnold raised four children on their farm; Ronald, Shelia, Wayne and Ardyce.
After Arnold retired, June and Arnold enjoyed many hours together, planting trees, working in their garden and flower beds, as well as baking scrumptious breads and pies. All of her children and grandchildren spent time in her kitchen, learning the secrets of baking the perfect apple pie! June’s faith was very important to her, which she witnessed to anyone around her. She remained active in Ladies Aid until moving into the Good Shepherd Home.
June and Arnold moved to Watford City in 2001, living at the Horizon Apartments until moving to the Good Shepherd Home in 2013. At the time of her passing, June and Arnold had been married for 67½ years.
June is preceded in death by her parents, Julie and Ole Mathistad, and her brothers, Edwin and Mormon.
At her request, June’s ashes will be spread among the trees that she and Arnold planted on their farm in Bear Den Township.
Any memorials should be sent to the music department of First Lutheran Church, 201 3rd Avenue NW, Watford City, N.D., 58854.
