Gerd was born in Berlin, Germany, and raised by his father, Anton, and mother, Gertrude, in Blumberg. He attended the Andrea’s School in Berlin and began his medical training at the Rostock University, one of the oldest schools in Germany. He was drafted into the German army before his training was complete and worked as an orderly at the Eastern Front. During the war, 1944/45, he met his wife to be, Nadja, at the hospital in Bernau. They  married on May 31, 1946.
They moved to Rostock in order for Gerd to continue his medical training. Their son, Goetz-Rainer, was born there in 1947.
In 1951, they immigrated to Canada and arrived in Prince George, British Columbia, in January 1952. After working in logging camps as a first aid technician and gaining various medical certificates, Gerd returned to Germany’s Kiehl University in the 1960s to complete his medical training.
After completing various medical board exams and gaining a number of licenses, he interned at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and continued his residency at the Lutheran Deaconist Hospital in Minneapolis and Grosse Point Farms Hospital in Michigan. He went to Vanderhoof, British Columbia, and practiced at the St. John’s Hospital for five years.
In 1974, Gerd and Nadja moved to Watford City, N.D., where he gave 21 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Watford City and McKenzie County, and delivered over 1,000 babies. He worked tirelessly at all hours of the day and night to deliver the utmost care to the residents and continued to practice until his first retirement in 1995.
In 1995, they moved to Bismarck, N.D., where he practiced medicine part-time at the Q & R Clinic in the Medcenter One Hospital and later at the North Dakota State Penitentiary until November 2009.
