Darold Hitland

Darold Hitland, 74, Bismarck, died Jan. 22, 2011, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Craig Schweitzer officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Darold was born July 18, 1936, in Charlson, N.D., the son of Bjarne and Gertrude (Ellestad) Hitland. He was raised and educated in Minot, N.D., and graduated from Minot State College with a degree in education. Darold taught high school for 30 years in Alexander, N.D., where he worked as a teacher, coach and administrator.
He married Ida Aamodt on June 14, 1964, and they made their home in Alexander, N.D. He retired in 1991, and he and his family moved to Watford City. In 2004, he and Ida moved to Bismarck to be near family.
Darold enjoyed participating in and watching football, basketball, and baseball. He was active in all the churches that he belonged to during his life.
Darold is survived by his wife, Ida, Bismarck; his children, Jeff (Laura) Hitland, Randolph, N.J., Michael (Holly) Hitland, Mobridge, S.D., and Rhonda (Joel) Erickson, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Jacob and Matthew Hitland, Jalen Hitland, and Brianna Erickson; his siblings, Harriet Nygaard (Bill Messner) Jamestown, N.D., and Arvine (Judy) Hitland, Lincoln City, Ore.
Darold was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Larry Nygaard.
