Betty Shobe

Betty June Shobe, 93, of Bismarck, formerly of New Town, passed away Nov. 30, 2017, in a Bismarck hospital.
She was born June 23, 1924, at the family farm near Watford City, N.D., to John and Harriet (Glascock) Lawlar. She graduated from Watford City High School and in her young life worked on their family farm before going to work in Minneapolis. She returned to assist on the family farm while her brothers served in World War II and then began work as a bookkeeper in Sanish, N.D. While there she met her future husband Charles Shobe. They were married Dec. 8, 1945, and lived on the family ranch near Reunion Bay south of New Town.
Betty spent her life raising her family, partnering with Charles on their grain farm and cattle ranch. She was a fine horsewoman and ranching partner alongside Charles, and in later years, Scott and Trudy Ruland. She sewed, baked, cooked, gardened and enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren all of these skills until her health prevented it.
She was an active member of Grand Valley and Bethel Lutheran Churches, participating in Ladies Aid/ Circle and Sunday School education. She encouraged and contributed transportation and other work towards her children’s music and school activities, attending many recitals, concerts, and other school functions. Charles and Betty were avid dancers and enjoyed sharing this with friends when their busy schedules allowed.
Betty is survived by her children, Marcia (Rod) Olson, Livingston, Mont; Jayson (Debby), Lewistown, Mont.; Cathy (Rollie) Morud, Bemidji, Minn.; Guy (Judy), Rapid City, S.D.; Joel (Susan), St. Cloud, Minn.; and Mary (Dana) Syvrud, Bismarck, N.D.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Frances Sunwall and Marjorie McRoberts; and many nieces and nephews.
