More Wolves headed to State Track
Watford City track teams improving with each meet

The Wolves varsity track teams had two good showings this past week as the Wolves girls team won the Williams County Invitational last Tuesday before taking fourth at the New Salem Invitational at the Bismarck Bowl. In the same two meets, the boys team took second at the Williams County Meet and third at the New Salem Invitational.

"The girls ran very well on Saturday," stated Greg Brown, girls head coach. "The girls 800 meter relay of Peyton Martin, Olivia Sundeen, Kara Johnsrud and Sibee Jokela qualified for State, while Sibee Jokela qualified for State in the 800 meter run. In addition, the 1,600 meter relay of Marti Quale, Kade Ross, Kara

In the Williams County Meet, Marti Quale won the 800 and 1,600 meter runs, while Sibee Jokela won the 3,200 meter run. Also placing in first place for the Wolves was the 800 and 1,600 meter relay teams.

In the boys division, Greg Skurupey was a double winner as he won both the 400 meter dash and the high jump, while Casey Jore took first in the 3,200 meter run and Jason Shipman won the 110 meter hurdles. The boys 400 meter and 3,200 meter relay teams also won first place finishes at the meet.

In Saturday’s New Salem Invitational, Rowdy Lund had a big day for the Wolves as he qualifed for State in the 200 meter dash, and also won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with State qualifying times.

In the girls divison at the New Salem Invitational, Sibee Jokela had a State qualifying time in the 800 meter run, while the 800 meter relay team also clocked a State qualifying time.

Wolves varsity girls take
third at Kenmare Invite

Paige Anderson fired a 13-over par, 85, to take second place honors for the Watord City varsity girls golf team on Monday, April 28 as the Wolves placed in third place with a score of 391 at the Kenmare Invitational Varsity Meet.

Tioga won the meet with a score of 367, while Kenmare was second with a 373.

"Tioga and Kenmare are tough competitors as they both have rosters filled with talented veteran players," stated LeRoy Bettenhausen, Wolves head coach. "Meets like this only make us better as the ladies are competing against some of the toughest golfers in the conference and region."

Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Shelly Schwan, 98; Krystle Folland, 103; Emilie Anderson,105; Karson Pederson, 110; and Sam Schwan, 115.

"The ladies played well, but their balls rolled off the greens on too many occasions because they didn’t factor in the dry conditions and ground slope," stated Bettenhausen. "We need to focus on improving our course management skills, especially since the Northwest Conference Meet and the Region 6 Meet are at Kenmare."

JV Golfers compete at Hazen

Watford City had two golfers place in the top six at Hazen’s Junior Varsity/Junior High Girls Golf Meet Tuesday, April 29.

In the junior varsity division, Watford City’s Shaunta Miller placed second with a 50, while teammate Brenea Willcox finished third with a 56. The lady Wolves were just strokes away from winning individual medals in the junior high division.

"This was a good, fun experience," stated Bettenhausen. "The ladies played well and showed a lot of improvement."

Competing on the Wolves’ JV/junior high teams are MeLinda Haugeberg, Brenea Willcox, Shaunta Miller, Ashley Hilton, Tara Loomer, Bailey Berquist, Fallon Maston, Kira Kostad and Jayden White Owl.

 

Watford boys golf team
takes 5th at Stanley Invite

The Watford City Wolves boys varsity golf team took fifth place with a combined score of 359 at the Stanley Invitational last week before taking eighth place at the Beach Invitational on Monday, June 5.

At Stanley, the host team won the tournament with a score 323, while Lewis & Clark/Berthold was second with 336.

Nick Liebel led the Wolves in scoring with rounds of 38 and 44 to shoot a score of 82, which tied him for fourth place individually.

Also scoring for Watford City was Daylen Langeurd, 90; Chris Larsen, 91; Dillon Langerud, 96; and Seth Dougherty, 99.

In Monday’s action, the Wolves took eighth out 18 teams with a combined score of 362. Hazen won the meet with a score of 322.

Nick Liebel again led the Wolves with an 18-hole score of 85, followed by Daylen Langerud with a 90. Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Chris Larsen with a 92, Dillon Langerud with a 95, Seth Dougherty with a 97 and Douglas Rolfson with a 98.

 

Anderson to play in Lions
All-Star basketball game

Paige Anderson has been selected to play in the 2008 Lions All-Star Girls Basketball series.

Anderson, a 5’6" guard, averaged 17.7 points per game and had 65 assists and 61 steals during her senior year with the Watford City Wolves.

Joining Anderson on the Class B roster are Samantha Baldwin, Grafton; Kristin Bearstail, Bismarck Shiloh Christian; Jada Meiklejohn, LaMoure; Abby Nasset, Bowman County; Kristen Killoran, Maple Valley; Christine Miller, New Town; Brittany Wirth, Starkweather-Munich; Tanna Trotter, Killdeer; Brittany Anderson, Bowman County; Valerie Scherr, Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock; and Samantha Dravland, Grafton.

The Lions All-Star games between the Class A and Class B squads are set for July 15 at the Bismarck Civic Center and July 16 at the Fargo Civic Center.
