Farmers Union donates freeze dryer to Watford City High School Meat Science program

A generous donation from the McKenzie County Farmers Union is bringing innovation and new opportunities to students at Watford City High School. The organization recently provided a state-of-the-art Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to the school’s Meat Science program, supporting student learning in agricultural processing and product development.
Students in the Meat Science class, taught by Samantha Doneen, were all smiles as they gathered around the new equipment for a photo. From left to right: Walker Cundiff, James Odenbach, Jacob DeCoteau, Carter Branstrom, Rowdy Mott, and Jace Brown stand proudly in the school’s food science lab where the freeze dryer will be put to good use.
“This generous gift from the McKenzie County Farmers Union is going to make a huge difference,” said Doneen. “It allows our students to learn modern preservation techniques and explore value-added agriculture. We’re planning to start by freeze-drying beef liver for dog treats, but the possibilities for learning-and fundraising-are endless.”
