District begins naming process for elementary schools

With Watford City’s second elementary school scheduled to be open next fall, the McKenzie County Public School District No. 1 is facing a challenge they have never encountered before. And that challenge is what are they going to name the new school, as well as the existing elementary school.
“It is relatively standard in school districts with multiple elementary schools to have different names and to promote a unique identity and school pride with each building,” states Steve Holen, district superintendent.
While the school board could name each of the schools on their own, Holen says the board is instead asking the public to help them come up with new names.
“No parameters have been established at this time regarding the names or concepts,” states Holen. “All ideas will be reviewed and considered for further discussion at the school board level.”
Holen says the school board is hoping to have ideas ready for proposal later this month with decisions to be made by October for final ratification and to be included in the construction plans.
