During the April Director’s Cut broadcast, North Dakota Director of Mineral Resources, Lynn Helms, announced that the five billionth barrel of oil has been extracted from the Bakken Formation.
“At the end of February, we exceeded five billion barrels of oil from the Bakken and Three Forks formations,” said Helms.
Oil was first discovered in North Dakota in 1951 near Tioga, and Helms said that the industry has come a long way since then. He continued to explain that a large majority of the oil that has been extracted in North Dakota has come from the Bakken area, “That is pretty significant because North Dakota’s total cumulative from all pools is 6.9 billion. So 1.9 billion from all the other formations and pools in the state, predominantly the Mission Canyon, but five billion barrels from the Bakken and Three Forks putting us right at the 6.9 billion mark.”
