Former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp made that claim during a recent event hosted by Concordia College. She was joined by former Governor Ed Schafer for a conversation entitled “With Malice Toward None: A Conversation about Civility, the Common Good, and the Future of the American Dream.” It was a refreshing discussion about how we can better maneuver the shark infested waters of today’s political rancor.
Our history is replete with examples of everything from a civil war to Senators bleeding profusely after fights on the floor of the U.S. Senate. So it’s obviously been much worse than the environment we find ourselves in today.
But we weren’t alive then. So, in our lifetime, is it fair to say that the political discourse is the worst it has ever been? That’s obvious to anyone paying attention.
