Ida was born in Alexander, N.D., on June 11, 1914, to parents Eli and Ada (Chessmore) Johnson. She had five sisters and one brother. Ida attended grade school in Charbonneau, N.D. She graduated from high school in Alexander in 1931.
Ida married Harold Sather on Sept. 16, 1934. They worked on various farms in the Alexander area until 1940, when they went to Glacier National Park and worked. Everything went good there until one day Ida was washing dishes and looked up at the window and a bear was looking back at her. She said that it was time to come back to Sidney. Ida and Harold leased the Lone Tree ranch from Augustus Vaux until 1949, when they purchased a ranch in the Horse Creek community. Ida liked to cook and no one left her home hungry. She enjoyed feeding the threshing crews and round-up crews. She would cook everyone’s favorites. She could whip up her Norwegian dishes in her sleep. They sold the ranch in 1964 and moved to the Sidney area, and later to Crane. Harold was in the trucking business and they bought the Stockman Bar in 1966, which Ida managed. Harold, her husband of 55 years, died in 1989. She moved into the Crestwood Inn in 2001 until 2005, when she entered the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Ida loved doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Ida died on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care.
