Llaney Norby

Llaney C. Norby, 74, of Kennebunkport, Maine, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday morning, Feb. 21, 2010, at his home. A service was held at the Church on The Cape, 3 Langsford Rd., Cape Porpoise on Wednesday, March 3, at 1 p.m. A service in North Dakota will be planned in the future.
He was born in Watford City, N.D., in 1936, the son of William and Margaret Norby. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for two years prior to the Vietnam War. He then took a position at General Mills in the Midwest, and then a chemical engineering position at Celanese in New Jersey.
While in New Jersey, he met and fell in love with his future wife. On April 15, 1967, he married Dorset Hill in Staten Island, N.Y. They moved to Kennebunk in 1968 where he took a position at West Point Pepperell in Biddeford. He worked there for 25 years. While at West Point Pepperell, he invented a flame retardant flocked fabric that led to many advancements in the textile industry.
Llaney was an accomplished track athlete during his high school and college years. He was responsible for starting the Twin K Track club in the early 1980s, which allowed him to share his love of track and field events with local children. As a result of his efforts, many members of the track club competed successfully at the state level.
Llaney will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, and a father and grandfather who would give everything he had for the well-being of his children.
He was known for his wonderful baking and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He was famous for his cherry pie and had mastered the art of the perfect pie crust. He was an avid stamp collector which was a hobby he started as a child. In recent years, he had become a wine enthusiast and had developed into a real connoisseur. Llaney always spoke fondly of his childhood in North Dakota and was extremely proud of his Norwegian heritage.
Llaney was predeceased by his wife Dorset of 42 years.
He will be sadly and lovingly missed by his sister Margo, her husband Michael Harvey and their sons Eric and Justin; his son Reginald, his wife Helen, and their four children, Joshua, Olivia, Luke and Isabella; his daughter Dorset Norby and many relatives and dear friends across the country.
