Keith was born Dec. 30, 1946, in Pueblo, Colo., to Hallie David Rather and Shirley Atkinson. He was raised in Laramie, Wyo., where he graduated high school in 1964. He attended Wyotech, where he later taught classes for several years.
He married Penny Curby in 1969. They had four children. They moved to Colorado and then to South Dakota. They later divorced and he moved to Fort Collins, Colo. There he married Ruth Mary Lyons. They were married for 21 years before divorcing. He owned several businesses, including K & S Enterprises and a flea market in Loveland.
