Margaret Lauer

Posted 1/15/14 (Wed)

Funeral services for Margaret Lauer, 77, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Watford City, N.D., were held Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the First Lutheran Church in Watford City, N.D., with Pastor Rob Favorite officiating. Interment was in Schafer Cemetery in Watford City, N.D.
Margaret Lillian Lauer was born on Aug. 9, 1936, in Shafer, N.D., to John and Armilda Buffin Kummer. Raised in Watford City, N.D., she graduated from High School in 1954 and then attended Dickinson State College and received an Associate’s Degree in elementary education.
After meeting Donald Lauer, who was working in the oil fields of North Dakota, she fell in love and was married on March 13, 1957, at the First Lutheran Church in Watford City, N.D. They had four children together and her years were spent raising her children and following her husband through the states of North Dakota and Montana where he continued to work on the oil wells. In 1989, Margaret suffered the first of many losses as her youngest son Mark was killed in an automobile accident in Watford City, N.D., in 1989.
She moved to Bismarck, N.D., in 1992, after the loss of her beloved husband Donald and lived with her son, Clint. Margaret spent many years enjoying life in Bismarck. Her sister, Wanda Pedersen and her family lived close by and her life revolved around helping her son, watching her sister’s children grow up and have little ones of their own and enjoying time with her sister planning the holidays, family gatherings, going shopping or just sitting for coffee and chat.
In 2005, after the loss of her son Clint, she moved to Virginia where she lived with her daughter, Millie. This was a major change since she had lived all of her life in the midwest, but she adjusted well and enjoyed her daily routine of life in Virginia and helping out her daughter. Her interests included embroidery which she and her daughter would enjoy together out on the back deck, her love of college football with her favorite team, Notre Dame and learning about the history of Virginia and the local area. Her favorite place to visit was Mount Vernon, where George Washington lived. Margaret always had an interest in the Amish way of life and this past fall was able to travel to Lancaster, Pa., where she enjoyed several days seeing the countryside and learning about the life and culture of the Amish.
Margaret died on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at MedStar Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Millie of Springfield, Va; son John; sister, Wanda (Don) Pedersen of Bismarck, N.D.; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
Margaret Lauer was preceded in death by her husband Donald Lauer; two sons, Mark Lauer and Clint Lauer; parents John and Armilda Kummer; and three brothers, baby John Jr., Cap Kummer and Jack Kummer.
