Robert Roles

Robert “Bob” Roles, 79, Williston, N.D., passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minn.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday afternoon, May 30, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston by Father Russell Kovash. Interment will follow.
An Evening Vigil will be held Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Everson Memorial Chapel.
Robert Mathew Roles was born Sept. 28, 1933, on a farm near Calio, N.D. He was the son of Anton “Tony” and Mary Ann “Maymie” (Poss) Roles. He was baptized and confirmed in Calio, raised on farms near Calio and Egeland, N.D., and educated in country schools near Calio and in Egeland.
From 1953-1955 Bob served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.
 On Nov. 15, 1958, Robert was united in marriage with Marlene Ann Sherven at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, N.D.
Bob worked in the oil field since the early 1950’s. He started driving truck, hauling scoria and gravel to rigs. For several years, he owned a rat hole machine with Tom Harney and drilled rat holes (starting holes for rigs) and water wells. He also contracted with Smith International, selling drill bits to oil rigs, and later became Regional Manager for Smith International for over 20 years.
Bob enjoyed raising and showing quarter horses and paint horses, Minnesota Twins baseball, reading western novels, watching western movies, fishing, snowmobiling, having coffee and telling stories with friends, and going to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas with his children. Most importantly, he cherished spending time with his family.
 He was a member of the Mon-Dak Quarter Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, and the American Legion.
 Surviving Bob are his wife, Marlene Ann Roles of Williston; his children, daughter Mary Lynn Johnson of Grand Forks, N.D.; and her daughter, Cassandra Lynn, daughter Barbara Gail Stroh of Franklin, Tenn.; and her husband, Patrick, and their daughters, Abbygail Grace and Alecia Faith, daughter Cynthia Jean Roles of Williston; son Robert Alan Roles of Watford City, N.D.; and his wife Kristy (Krogen) Roles and their daughter, Katherine Paige and son, Matthew Alan, son, Kevin John Roles of Lakeville, Minn.; and his wife, Nikki (Westergard) Roles and their daughter, Brianna Marie and son, Spencer Westin, his sisters, Ceceilia R. (Ed) Georgen of Cando,; Isabel M. Johnson of Williston; and Marva Jean “Jeanie” Larson of Saint Ignatius, Mont.; aunt Thelma Roles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
