H. J. Patterson

H.J. Patterson, 76, Norwich, died March 11, 2013, in his home.
Hugh was born July 17, 1936, to Hugh A. Patterson and Hyacinth (Schultz) Patterson at Watford City, N.D. He lived with his parents north of Arnegard, N.D., and then moved to Lewis and Clark Project south of Williston, N.D., for a time and then moved to a ranch south of Denbigh, N.D.
Hugh rode horse to Harriet Country School for his first eight years and then went to Watford City High School, where he graduated. He also attended Veterinarian School at Fort Collins, Colo.
Hugh and JoAnn (Smith) Patterson were married April 26, 1959, (53 years) in Towner, N.D. They farmed and ranched until 1980. In 1969, Hugh started driving truck part-time. In 1980, they moved to Norwich, N.D., where he started H.J. Patterson Trucking. He retired in 2012.
Hugh enjoyed singing and playing his guitar with his band, “Mouse River Boys.” He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and riding his horse “Pedro.”
He was a member of Norway Lutheran Church, Denbigh, N.D., and Zion Lutheran Church, Towner, N.D. He was a life member of the North American Hunting Club, the National Rifle Association, Frozen Fingers Music Club, and 50 Years in the Saddle Club. He had a CD made called “Just Country.”
H.J. is survived by his wife, JoAnn Patterson, Norwich; three sons, Dwayne (JoAnn) Patterson, Arlen (Beth) Patterson, and Mark (Sandra) Patterson, all of Norwich; seven grandchildren, Dustin (Jackie) Kyle, Carrie, Arlen, Travis and Sadie Rose; and many nieces, nephews and cousins survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Towner, N.D. Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the guest register Saturday, one hour prior to the service in the church.
A private burial will be held at a later time.
