Funeral service for Doris Gudmunson Dahl, 92, of Watford City, N.D., was at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at the Cross Point Wesleyan Church in Watford City, N.D. Doris L. (Hastings/Gudmunson) Dahl was born at rural Charlson, N.D., on Nov. 29, 1920, the daughter of Bert S. and Dolly (Brunk) Hastings. Doris was raised at Charlson and attended the Hastings School. She went to high school in Watford City.
In her teens, Doris went to the west coast and worked for several years before returning to North Dakota. She married Gerhard Gudmunson Jan. 4, 1947, in Plano Ill., moving back to North Dakota in the spring of 1947 to Gerhard’s farm where they farmed for many years. They lived in Keene, N.D., for a few years where she ran the Keene Café. Doris and Gerhard were rural mail carriers for many years and also drove school bus for several years. In 1977, when Gerhard’s health started failing, they moved to Watford City. He passed away July 5, 1987.
Doris was a member of the Clear Creek Lutheran Church but has attended the Cross Point Wesleyan Church with her family for many years. She worked at several cafés in Watford City until she retired. Working with crafts, embroidering, and sewing are things she loved to do. One of her favorite pasttimes was bowling, being on a league for many years. Their team even won a state tournament.
Doris married Amil Dahl in 1990. He passed away in 2005. Loving to be around people, she and Amil went to the cafés for lunch almost every day. Doris was well known for making lefse and selling it. Known to many around the area as Grandma, she loved being called “Grandma.”
Doris moved to the Good Shepherd Home in 2011. She was loved by the staff at the nursing home and thought it was her job to help wherever she could.
Doris passed away Feb. 18, 2013, at the McKenzie County Hospital. She will be missed by many.
Doris is survived by: her son, Wayne Gudmunson, New Rockford, N.D.; daughters, Barbara (Bill) Mathis, Watford City, N.D., and Dolly (Ted) Pfau, Minot, N.D.; stepdaughter, Amy (Larry) Zimmiond, Keene, N.D.; sister, June Copple, Spring Hill, Fla.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by both husbands; two sons, Gordon and Kenneth Gudmunson; and siblings, Lettie Wilson, Edessia Toth, Iona Lawler, Margaret Henning, Ruby Weaver, Arnold Hastings, Claude Hastings, and Lawrence Hastings.
