Harold H. Hoehn was born to Franklin George Hoehn and Amelia (Millie) Alice Elizabeth Sandmeyer Hoehn on Nov. 3, 1911, in Mount Vernon, Mo. In 1914, George and Millie Hoehn moved Harold and his sister, Viva, to a farmstead near Alexander, N.D. Harold started school at the old Elk School House, and graduated in 1929 from Alexander High School. He then attended Myhre Electrical School and the Wahpeton School of Science.
In March 1941, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army and joined the 188th Field Artillery Unit (later called the 957th), attending Basic Training in Fort Sill, Okla. with further training at Fort Warren, Wyo., Camp Murray and Fort Lewis, Wash., Desert Training Center, Calif., and Muskogee, Okla. He left Camp Shanks, N.Y., in December 1943 on the HMS Britannia for Chichester, England. He landed on Utah Beach, France, on June 12, 1944, and served with the 1st Army across Europe. He was discharged at Camp McCoy, Wisc., in Sept. 1945 at the rank of Technical Sergeant (Platoon Sergeant-Communications) with a Bronze Star Medal, the European Theatre of Operations with five battle stars, the American Defense Medal, and a good conduct medal.
Harold returned to North Dakota and married Mildred Thyra Siemon on June 2, 1946, in Sibley, Iowa. Harold and Thyra had three children, Patricia Ann, Gary George, and Helen Martha Hoehn. They farmed together in Elk Township until Thyra died from cancer on Dec. 29, 1972.
Harold married Lola Maxine Sande on Jan. 12, 1974, in Williston, N.D. They continued to live and work on the farm until they moved to Williston in 1983. They lived at their home on First Avenue East in Williston until they moved to the Briarwood. Lola Hoehn died in February 2010 from cancer.
Harold continued to live at the Briarwood until he developed pneumonia on his 101st birthday. After a stay in the hospital, he transferred to the Bethel Home under Hospice care.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, and his two wives. He is survived by his children, Patricia (Richard) Smith, Montrose, Colo., Gary (Barbara) Hoehn, Wetmore, Colo., and Helen (Faron) Correll, Stillwater, Minn.; his grandchildren, Aaron (Charlcey) Correll, Fargo, N.D., Amy Correll, Little Canada, Minn., Amanda Hoehn, Canoga Park, Calif., and Matthew Hoehn, Wetmore, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
