Ruth Baye, 103, a resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Watford City, N.D., died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the home. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Watford City. Interment was held at Schafer Cemetery.
Ruth Lorene Baye was born June 7, 1908, to Herbert and Jettie (Dewhirst) Jenner at the Box Spring Ranch, near Arnegard, N.D. She grew up on the ranch and in the badlands of North Dakota until her parents stopped ranching and moved the family to California.
On June 22, 1926, Ruth married Ben Baye in Sidney, Mont. Bill and Ruby Thompson served as their witnesses. To this union, five children were born, Betty, Bennie, Joyce, Marlene and Darlene. They lived on the Long X Ranch Park House and log cabin until Ben passed away on June 10, 1963. Ruth continued to run the ranch for a few years and raised her quarter horses until the 1970s.
Ruth worked at the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City as a cook. She loved the Badlands where she grew up and instilled this in all of her grandchildren. For many years after moving to town, Ruth would still spend the summer months at the Little Missouri River in the cabin and later in her trailer.
She broke her hip in her early 90s and could no longer care for herself. In 2003, Ruth entered the Good Shepherd Home and remained there until she passed on March 31, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben; her children, Betty Lange, Bennie Baye, Joyce Baye, Marlene Richey and Darlene Lucas; grandchildren, Ben Baye III (Shorty), Mark McDowell, Barbie Baye Welnel and Michael Lucas.
Ruth is survived by son-in-law, Howard Lange; and grandchildren, Montie (Linda) McDowell, Kimberly Botch, Rocky (Judy) Baye, Kathy (Jake) Wyman, Tori (Tim) Dwyer, Bennie (Beth) Lange, Benji (Jeff) Showers, Howdie (JoAnn) Lange, and Jaimie (Shane) Johnson; and 43 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
