Gerhard Karlstad

Gerhard W. (Jerry) Karlstad of Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Banks, N.D., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, Dec. 26, 2010.
Born June 27, 1912, in North Dakota, he was the last of his family of nine children born to Norwegian immigrants.
In early years, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, U.S. Naval Shipyard, Lutheran Social Services, and retired from the U.S. Post Office.
He was very active in Sons of Norway, a charter member of the former Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and sang with his brothers and nephew in the Karlstad Family Quartet.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene (Akland); son, Philip, and his wife, Lilia; daughter, Joyce, and her husband, Robert Borrud; grandchildren, John (Heather) Karlstad, Sergei M, Ruth Borrud, Kathryn Borrud, Peter (Sarah) Borrud; two precious great-grandsons, Logan and Ethan; special “daughter,” Janet Moe, and family; sisters and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews; and wonderful neighbors and friends.
We’ll always remember his wonderful smile, twinkle in his eyes, generosity to so many, beautiful bass voice, fantastic memory, and deep Christian faith.
Memorial services were held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Arden and Morse Avenue on Monday, Jan. 3, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Mercy Hospice.
