Wolves fall to Stanley for District 15 volleyball title

Watford City’s varsity volleyball team got off to a good start in the District 15 Volleyball Tournament sweeping Trinity Christian on Tuesday evening as the Wolves defeated the Crusaders 25-22, 25-10 and 25-23 to advance to the title game against Stanley.
But against Stanley, Watford City ran into a hard-hitting team which took three hard-fought games from the Wolves.
“We had close sets against Stanley,” states Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach. “Our girls played with heart and hustled for every ball.”
As the District 15 runners-up, Watford City advances to the Region 8 Tournament, which got underway on Monday at the Northern Lights Center in New Town.
Watford City 3, Trinity Christian 0
Charlie Hystad and Karson Pederson had 10 kills each, while McKayla Haugeberg had 4 service aces as the Wolves rolled to an easy 3-0 sweep of the Trinity Christian Crusaders in Tuesday night’s action at the District 15 Volleyball Tournament.
Watford City, which entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, received a first round bye, and with the win over Trinity Christian took on Stanley for the district title.

Stanley 3, Watford City 0
Watford City really gave Stanley, the No. 1 seed in the District 15 Tournament, a run for their money in Thursday night’s title match. But in the end, the Wolves couldn’t match the Blue Jays’ fire power as Watford City fell to Stanley by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 26-24.
In the first two games, the Wolves had to claw their way back into the games after getting behind Stanley by as much as nine points midway through the games.
In the final game of the match, the Wolves led for the bulk of the game with Stanley coming back to take the win scoring the last two points.
“We had six blocks against Stanley which made them change some of their hits,” stated Deutsch. “They had only two blocks against us as our hitters did a good job of placing their hits.”
Karson Pederson and Dani Bates had seven kills each against the Blue Jays, while Charlie Hystad had five blocks.
