Watford City got off to a great start in Regional 7 Tournament baseball action last Friday dominating the Kenmare Honkers 11-1. But since then the weather has thrown a complete shutout as rainy conditions on Saturday and Monday have forced the cancellation of further tournament play.
“We were rained out Saturday and Monday,” states Justin Johnsrud, Wolves’ head coach. “The tournament has been pushed back and will finish up on Thursday in Minot. That is if the weather cooperates.”
While the Wolves can’t do anything about the weather, they can relish in the fact that last Friday they played some of the best baseball they have played all season en route to a decisive first round win in regional tournament action.
“We played one of the more complete games of the season,” states Johnsrud. “Langerud only had three strikeouts so the other 12 outs came from making defensive plays and not making any errors. If we continue to make plays defensively and hit the ball, I really like our chances in the Region 7 Tournament.”
Not only was Watford City’s defense solid against Kenmare but the Wolves’ offense was firing on all cylinders scoring 11 runs on 13 hits.
Watford City, which scored in every inning, led the Honkers 2-0 after the first inning before holding a 6-1 lead after three. Watford City then shut out Kenmare in the final two innings while scoring five more runs.
“Not one of our batters struck out,” said Johnsrud. “We hit the ball well all the way down the lineup. Any time you can make a team play defense and get outs you are improving your chances of winning. Kenmare played well but we were able to put the ball in play to advance runners which really improved our offensive game.”
Dillon Langerud picked up the win on the mound for the Wolves while at the plate, Trey Jacobson was three for four with a do uble and a triple.
