Rain or shine, wind or snow, nothing seems to be standing in the way of Watford City’s track teams as they pursue their dreams of competing in the State Class B Track Meet the end of this month. And it is that attitude that is not only impressing their coaches, but also making them stronger competitors.
“We had a 9 a.m. practice on Friday after a rainy and cold Tioga meet last Thursday,” stated Greg Gumke, boys’ head coach. “They all showed up and went to work getting the things done that we needed to get done for the meet on Saturday that we all knew would probably be canceled. I am so impressed by the attitudes and work ethic of these kids. If they continue to have a great attitude, work ethic, and belief in themselves and their abilities, we will finish this last month of our season strong. I can’t wait to see what happens.”
And the hard work being put in by the team seems to be paying big dividends as the Wolves boys team ran away from the competition at Tioga scoring 223 points to win the meet and outdistancing second place Divide County by 94 points, while the girls team came in second with 153 points, just 10 points behind Parshall.
At Tioga, Adam Brenna qualified for State in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.23 and Tyler Flatland turned in a qualifying time of 51.63 in the 400 meter dash.
“We are finally starting to see some drops in times on the track, proving what we are doing is working,” states Greg Brown, girls’ head coach. “Now we need to keep working hard into the state meet. We are working on getting the legs rested so we can start qualifying some events before Region.”
This week, the Wolves will be competing at Velva on Friday.
