Watford City’s track teams are taking advantage of good running conditions so far this spring as the boys team continues to qualify runners for the State Track Meet while the girls team continues to see steady improvement.
This past week, the boys team won the Northwest Conference Meet in Velva with a team score of 124 points and then tied for first at the Sakakawea Country Classic at Hazen with 83 points on Saturday.
At the Northwest Conference Meet, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna posted state qualifying times in the 400 meter dash. Brenna won the event with a time of 51.84, while Flatland finished second in 52.04.
The boys 800 meter relay team, consisting of Tyler Bates, Jason Shipman, Tyler Flatland and Adam Brenna, turned in a state qualifying time of 1:34.96 at the Hazen meet.
“We had a very good day overall as a team despite the after effects of the prom over the weekend,” stated Dave Gumke, boys head coach. “The guys have a good attitude and are continuing to work hard.”
Watford City’s girls also had a good showing in their last two meets as the Wolves finished in second place at the Northwest Conference with 104 points and then took third at the Hazen meet with 88 points.
McKayla Haugeberg had stellar performances for the Wolves in the last two meets with six first place and two second place finishes.
“As a team, I think that we are starting to get into shape and starting to compete very well,” stated Greg Brown, girls head coach. “We always are looking for faster times and longer throws and jumps but the girls have been competing very well. Our 3,200 meter relay team has just missed qualifying for State and McKayla Haugeberg is extremely close to qualifying in four events.”
This week, the Wolves will be competing in Tioga on Thursday and at the Invitational Meet at the Bismarck Community Bowl on Saturday.
