Watford City’s varsity volleyball team is probably now playing their best volleyball of the season. And the timing couldn’t have come at a better time as the Wolves took second place at the District 15 Volleyball Tournament in Stanley last week.
The Wolves, who received a first round bye, easily defeated Trinity Christian in three games before taking second place in the tournament as Watford City fell to Stanley for the district title in five hard-fought games.
The Wolves, who have a 12-15 overall record, are now competing in the Region 8 Tournament in Tioga.

Without starters Dani Bates in the line-up with a broken foot and McKayla Haugerg out with the flu, Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach, knew that her team was going to need to step up their level of play against the Crusaders in Tuesday night’s semifinal action of the District 15 Volleyball Tournament.
And step up, they did!
Watford City, who had struggled against Trinity Christian earlier in the season, swept the Crusaders in three games by scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-9.
“We were down 24-19 in the second game and Sierra Perdue had a number of service aces and the team came back to give us the win,” stated Deutsch. “It was a great accomplishment for us to come from behind and get that win.”
Karson Pederson led the Wolves with nine service aces and nine kills, while Marti Quale had 16 assists and six digs.
Individual statistics for Watford City from the match were as follows:

Stanley, 3, Watford City 2

Watford City very nearly pulled off the upset of the District 15 Tournament on Thursday evening as the Wolves almost knocked off the highly favored Stanley Blue Jays.
Riding high after their Tuesday victory over Trinity Christian, Watford City surprised the Blue Jays by taking the first game 25-15 before losing the next two games 25-10 and 25-19.
The Wolves would battle back in the fourth game to take a 27-25 win before falling in the fifth game by a score of 15-7.
“Our girls were ready to play and they played hard against Stanley,” stated Deutsch. “We surprised them in the first game, and then played as a team and won the fourth game.”
Overall, in spite of the loss to the Blue Jays, Deutsch was very pleased with the way her girls played.
“Our passes were good which allows the setters to make better sets for the hitters,” stated Deutsch. “And our hitters were then able to get the ball past their big blockers.”
McKayla Haugeberg led the Wolves with nine service aces, while Charlie Hystad had a team high eight kills. Karson Pederson ended the match with three blocks while Marti Quale and Sierra Perdue had 15 digs each.
