With a 55-6 win over the Bowman Bulldogs last Friday evening, Watford City will enter the Class A play-offs this Saturday as the No. 1 seeded team from Region 4. The Wolves, who will have home field advantage, will be hosting Des Lacs-Burlington, the No. 4 seed from Region 3, in first round playoff action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Fridley Field.
The Wolves finished their regular season undefeated with an impressive 8-0 record following Friday night’s win over Bowman County.
The Wolves got on the scoreboard quickly against Bowman as Nick Liebel took the Bulldogs’ opening kickoff 85 yards for the first of three first quarter touchdowns. Following Liebel’s touchdown, Derek Thompson scored the Wolves’ next touchdown with a nice nine-yard run up the middle. Trey Jacobson then hooked up with Liebel on a 35-yard touchdown pass. Kalin Mogen was successful on all three PATs to put the Wolves on top 21-0 after one quarter.
Watford City’s offense continued to click in the second quarter as the Wolves would put 21 more points on the scoreboard. Brady Lund scored first for the Wolves in the quarter on a 30-yard run with Jacobson and Liebel hooking up on touchdown passes of 43 and 40 yards. Mogen kicked the three PATs.
Bowman got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with the Wolves holding a 42-6 halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Watford City’s Brady Lund scored again on a 30-yard run for this second touchdown of the game, and after Mogen kicked the PAT, the Wolves led 49-6.
Josh Johnson scored Watford City’s final touchdown on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter to make the final 55-6.
Lund was the Wolves’ leading rusher with 139 yards on 14 carries, Liebel scored four touchdowns and Jacobson threw for 132 yards and three scores.
Watford City’s defense again did a great job holding the Bulldogs to 70 yards rushing and only 20 yards passing.
“We now enter the playoffs and start playing teams that are capable of beating anybody on any given day,” states Fred Fridley, Wolves head coach. “Des Lacs-Burlington brings a balanced running and passing game. Their tailback had over 200 yards rushing last week.”
