Spikers pick up big Region win over Ray

Watford City’s varsity girls volleyball team was put to the test this past week as the Wolves took on Region rivals, the Ray Jays, in dual action and then competed in the Dickinson Tournament on Saturday.
This week, the Wolves will be on the road as they travel to Trinity Christian on Monday, Oct. 5.

Watford City 3, Ray 2
Watford City got its first real test on the volleyball court on Sept. 21, when the Wolves traveled to Ray to take on the Jays in a key matchup.
The Wolves easily controlled the first two games of the match defeating the Jays, 25-14, in both games.
But the Jays turned the tables on Watford City in the second two games as Ray battled back to down the Wolves, 25-19, and 25-22, to force a fifth and deciding game.
The Wolves answered the challenge in the fifth game defeating the Jays, 15-9.
Watford City had 34 kills and 17 service aces in the match.
Ricki Lindley led Watford City’s offense with 13 kills and six service aces, while Katie Mogen had six service aces and 10 kills.
Defensively, Mogen had nine digs, while Mackenzie Sparby had two blocks.
“It was a big Region win for the Wolves,” stated Brad Foss, Wolves’ head coach.

Dickinson Tournament
Watford City struggled in the Dickinson Tournament on Saturday as the Wolves went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the Silver Division in tournament action.
The Wolves opened pool play defeating New England by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-23, before falling to Billings Central, 1-2, by scores of 25-22, 14-25 and 15-25.
In the final round of pool play, Watford City lost to Fargo Oak Grove, 1-2, by scores of 20-25, 18-25 and 26-24.
In tournament action, Watford City picked up an opening round win defeating MonDak by scores of 25-18 and 25-12, before falling to Williston in two games, 21-25 and 15-25.
The Wolves then fell to Kindred, 1-2, by scores of 15-25, 25-19, and 20-25. In their final game of the tournament, Watford City was defeated by Plentywood,1-2, by scores of 16-25, 25-23, and 26-28.
Katie Mogen paced the Wolves offensively in the tournament with 37 kills, 22 blocks and 13 service aces, while Alli Mogen had 67 assists and Brea Jore had 39 digs.
“The Dickinson tourney was one where we played many very good teams,” stated Foss. “We played very well at times and we struggled at times! We just weren’t able to get over the hump in many of the matches.”
