Girls cage team moves up to No. 10 in Power Poll

Watford City’s varsity girls basketball broke into the top 10 in the North Dakota Class B Girls Basketball Power Poll last week as the Wolves are now rated the No. 10 team.
This past week, the Wolves improved their season record to 10-1 with a 70-35 win over New Town on Monday, Jan. 12. This week, the girls will be will be traveling to Trenton on Thursday and then travel to Beulah to take on the Miners on Saturday.

Watford City 70, New Town 35
Watford City made short work of New Town last Monday as the Wolves held the Eagles to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters en route to a 70-35 win.
Three Watford City players scored in double figures in the contest with Ricki Lindley scoring a game high 19 points to lead both teams in scoring. Also scoring in double digits for the Wolves was April Spruell and Katie Mogen with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Wolves jumped out to a commanding, 22-8, first quarter lead and never looked back as the Wolves coasted to the easy win. Watford City led the Eagles by 30 points, 45-15, at halftime, and by 36 points going into the final eight minutes of play.
“We got off to great start with our pressure defense and we were able to force the Eagles into turnovers that led to easy buckets for our girls,” stated John Zenz, Wolves’ head coach. “New Town sat back in a zone and collapsed around our post players.”
With New Town collapsing in the middle, the Wolves were forced to take outside shots. And for a change, the shots fell for the Watford City.
“It was nice to see us hit some perimeter shots,” stated Zenz. “That is an area we have struggled with as of late.”
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Alli Mogen and Mackenzie Sparby with seven points each, Tarynn Jacobson and Alyssa Prichard with four points each, Lea Arndt with two points, while ReiAnn Lindley and Krystal Wold netted one point each.
For the game, the Wolves hit on 19 of 44 attempts from the field and were good on 23 of 41 attempts at the charity stripe.
