The Watford City Wolves stamped their ticket to the State Dual Tournament with a 48-24 dual win over Killdeer last Thursday night.
The dual itself was not much of a contest with only five contested weights. However, the Wolves won four out of five, including pins by Liam Shannon and Dakota Garmann, to clinch a second place finish in the Region IV Dual Standings. The region’s top two teams advance to the Civic Center in Bismarck in two weeks for the Class B State Tournament. The State Dual Tournament is held in conjunction with the individual tournament.
This Saturday, the Wolves will compete in the Region IV Individual Tournament in New Salem. The Wolves will expect to fill 11 of the 14 weight classes for the individual tournament.
“We have a great shot to send nine or 10 kids to State,” states Mitch Greenwood, Wolves’ head coach. “I don’t think there’s a single kid on our team who will represent us at the regionals who doesn’t have the ability to place in the top four and qualify for State.”
Greenwood’s squad completed its regular season with a dual on Friday night in Minot at Bishop Ryan High School. The Lions, the top dual team in Region III kept their undefeated streak intact as they improved to 20-0 on the year with a 45-11 win over the Wolves.
“They’re a solid team,” stated Greenwood on Minot Ryan. “They don’t have any holes and they seemed to have their best kids where our best kids were at in our lineup. That’s tough to deal with some nights.”
