Wolves take third at Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament

The Watford City girls basketball team played their best game of the season on Thursday night as the Wolves defeated the Mandaree Warriors 64-50 to improve their season record to 10-15 and to take third place in the Region 8 Tournament.
In the semifinal action of the tournament, the Wolves fell to New Town 43-34.

After playing New Town, the defending Region 8 champions, close for the first three quarters of play in semifinal action of the Region 8 Tournament last Tuesday, Watford City’s offense sputtered in the fourth quarter as the Wolves fell to the Eagles 43-34 .
In another low scoring contest, the Wolves trailed the Eagles 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but then went on a 16-9 scoring spree in the second stanza to to take a 23-20 lead into the lockers at halftime.
But as happened so often throughout the season, the Wolves offense sputtered in the second half allowing the Eagles the take the win.
New Town outscored the Wolves 11-6 and 12-5 in the final two quarters to advance to the title game.
Mamie Kieson had a team high 15 points to lead the Wolves in scoring, while Kara Johnsrud ended the game with nine points.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Marti Quale with five points, Olivia Sundeen with four points and Shakira McLaughlin with two points.
For the game the Wolves shot 12 of 41 from the field for 29 percent and were good on 10 of 16 at the free-throw line for 62 percent.

Watford City 64, Mandaree 50

Four Watford City players hit double figures as the Wolves rolled over the Mandaree Warriors 64-50 in the battle for third place at the Region 8 Tournament on Thursday.
Mamie Kieson had a team high 16 points to lead the Wolves in scoring, while Olivia Sundeen netted 12 points and Marti Quale and Kara Johnsrud ended the game with 10 points each.
Watford City exploded for a 14-9 first quarter lead before Mandaree battled back to take a one point, 32-31, lead after two quarters of play.
But the second half belonged to the Wolves as Watford City blew the game wide open going on a 17-8 scoring run in the third quarter and then coasting to the win outscoring Mandaree 16-10 in the final eight minutes of play.
Desiraey Bolman led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points, while Toni Johnson and Ashly Hall netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Shakira McLaughlin with six points, Jayme Johnson with four points, Hallie Ault with three points, Karlee Hanna with two points and Dani Bates with one point.
Also scoring for Mandaree was Marie Spotted Horse with nine points and Audrey Irwin with two points,
For the game the Wolves shot 28 of 51 from the field for 55 percent and were good on seven of 17 at the free-throw line for 41 percent. Mandaree shot 36 percent from the field, hitting on 20 of 56 attempts and were good on five of 11 at the charity stripe for 45 percent.
Watford City outrebounded the Warriors 37-30.
