Spikers split to end regular season play

Watford City’s varsity volleyball team wrapped up its regular season action last week losing to Heart River on Tuesday, Oct. 23 and then edging Hazen on Wednesday. With the split, the Wolves ended their season with a 22-9 record and are now advancing to the District 15 Tournament, which began on Monday, Oct. 29 at the Trinity Christian gymnasium in Williston.
As the No. 2 seed, the Wolves received a first round bye in the tournament with their opening game on Tuesday. The tournament will wrap up on Thursday with the top four teams advancing to the Region 8 Tournament, which will begin on Monday, Nov. 5 at the Northern Lights Community Center in New Town.
Heart River 3, Watford City 2
Watford City struggled against a strong Heart River team last Tuesday as the Wolves fell to the Cougars 3-2.
The Cougars took the first game 20-20 with Watford City coming back to win the second game 27-25.
In a seesaw battle to the end, Heart River took the third game 25-7, with Watford City bouncing back to take the fourth game 25-16. The Cougars won the fifth and deciding game 15-13.
“We had trouble with their defense,” stated Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach. “They are a very quick team on defense.”
Taylor Dwyer led the Wolves offensively with six service aces, while Katie Mogen had 11 kills and Tori Hopkins had 20 assists. Defensively, Jessica Brown had five blocks and McKayla Haugeberg and Amanda Mogen had 18 digs in the match for Watford City.

Watford City 3, Hazen 1
Watford City closed out its regular season action on a strong note with a 3-1 win over the Hazen Bison. In a very close match, the Wolves took the first two games 25-23 and 25-21, with Hazen coming back to win the third game 25-20. Watford City then won the fourth game 25-22.
“Hazen is always a good matchup for us,” stated Nancy Deutsch, Wolves’ head coach. “The girls played hard and did very well with all the games being very close.”
Amanda Mogen led the Wolves with 13 kills and three blocks, while Tori Hopkins had 24 assists and 16 digs for Watford City.
