Watford City’s cross country teams definitely turned a lot of heads at the Regional Cross Country Meet in New Town on Saturday.
The Wolves’ girls team ran away from the competition to take first place while the boys team finished in fourth place.
“I felt the athletes ran extremely well on Saturday at Region,” stated Greg Brown, Wolves’ head coach. “Both the boys and girls teams were very determined and focused to place as a team.”
And focused they were as three Watford City girls, Asha Smith, Kade Ross and Addison Sundeen, finished in the top 20 as did Guy Ross on the boys team to make the All Region Team.
Asha Smith led the Watford City girls team with a second place finish with a time of 15:36. Kade Ross finished in fourth place with a time of 16:14, while Addison Sundeen came in 16th with a time of 17:23.
“The girls team looked extremely strong on Saturday running to great finishes,” stated Brown.
Other girls placing at the regional meet were Lea Arndt, 22nd, 17:43; Tara Loomer, 34th, 18:13; Bessie Schmitz, 36th, 17:43; and Kara Wold, 69th, 20:18.
“The  boys team fell just short of  their goal by placing fourth,” stated Brown. “But they ran so well that they did make other coaches a bit nervous on how they ran.”
Guy Ross led the Wolves’ boys team with a 12th place finish with a time of 19:00, while Dustin Kleppen came in 24th with a time of 19:48.
Other Watford City finishers in the boys division were John Meuchel, 30th, 20:06; Logan Gumke, 31st, 20:08; and Ted Ramage, 52nd, 22:08.
In the junior high boys division, Devin Schmitz took sixth, while Hunter DeFoe took seventh.
“The season is quickly winding down as we have the State Meet coming up on Oct. 22 in Fargo,” states Brown. “This should be a very exciting meet for both teams because they have been working hard to make themselves the best runners they can be.”
