Watford City jumped out to a quick 8-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Wolves downed the Trenton Tigers 54-44 in opening round action of the Region 8 Tournament on Monday afternoon. With the win, the Wolves improved their season record to 17-4.
In a ragged game that saw a combined 40 turnovers, it was Watford City’s ability to capitalize on Trenton miscues that proved to be the big difference in the game. Watford City scored 26 points on Trenton’s 22 turnovers while the Tigers were able to score five points on Watford City’s 18 miscues.
After holding a 12-6 first quarter lead, Watford City blew the game open in the second half outscoring the Tigers 21-10 to take a 33-16 lead into the lockers at halftime.
Trenton would mount a minor comeback in the third quarter as the Tigers outscored the Wolves 15-7 to cut Watford City’s advantage to 40-31. But the Wolves who were never challenged in the fourth quarter coasted to the easy win.
Three Watford City players scored in double figures with Nick Liebel posting a game high 21 points, including three three-pointers. Trey Jacobson had a double double for the Wolves as he netted 15 points and hauled down 10 rebounds, while Shawn Fulwider ended the game with 11 points.
Rounding out the scoring for Watford City was Curtis Lohse with five points and Tyler Flatland with two points.
For the game, the Wolves were good on 19 of 42 attempts from the field for 45 percent and were good on five of 11 from three-point land. At the free-throw line, the Wolves shot 46 percent, hitting on 11 of 24 attempts.
