The Watford City Wolves varsity girls basketball team ended their regular season action with a 42-39 win over Dickinson Trinity last Friday evening.
This week, the Wolves, who are 16-2 on the season, will be hosting the District 15 Girls Basketball Tournament, which runs Feb. 25, 26 and 28 at the Watford City High School gym.
Watford City, the No. 1 seed in the Tournament, will receive a first round bye, and then take on the winner of the North Shore/Plaza vs. Parshall game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament will conclude on Monday, Feb. 28 with play-in games set at 4 and 5:30 p.m. with the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
Watford City 42, Dickinson Trinity 39
After jumping out to a 16-6 first- quarter lead over Dickinson Trinity, Watford City held off a tough Titans team to close out their regular season play with a 42-39 win.
“It was a good close game for us,” stated Berton Bates, Wolves’ head coach. “Trinity slowed it down and we couldn’t run like we like to, but we executed well in the half court and got a big win against a team with only three losses.”
Watford City saw their 10-point first-quarter lead dwindle to just five points, 24-19, at halftime, but the Wolves would never give up the lead in the second half.
Alexis Sanford paced the Wolves in scoring as she knocked down three three-pointers to finish the game with a game high 12 points.
Also scoring for Watford City was Dani Bates with nine points, Jayme Johnson with eight points, Marti Quale with six points, McKayla Haugeberg with four points and Brianna Allex with three points.
Johnson led the Wolves with seven rebounds, while Haugeberg and Quale had three assists each. Haugeberg also ended the game with four steals.
